The end of the year 2016.....and Purple is Possible

Its the end of the year and like most people I have been on another planet. Hence my absence from here for sometime. The year ends with a lot of questions in your heart. Questions about why things happened the way they did and questions about whether the coming year will bring with it solutions to those questions.

You are not spared apprehension even if you have had a great year. You are worried about the coming year and hope that it shall be as easy the last. You are used to a certain amount of calm in your life and you dont have it in you to fight the hurricane that could come in the next season.

As I await the clock to tick away its final seconds. The apprehension of what is to come seems to build in me like the air in a shaken up beer bottle just waiting to explode. Its another year and a million opportunities along with it wait to be chosen. Choice a word that has the potential to change the very course of your life and yet a word not spoken or understood enough...

I was thinking what do I profile today what kind of SARI....and I thought why not the color purple. This color is the bane of most women. The perfect color of purple that suits you is rare as the kohinoor diamond and most women never step out thinking that I am going to buy a purple color sari today.

This year lets find that color of purple in our life, lets go after that elusive something that is going take some effort in finding. It could be matched with a different color tone. But your shade of purple you will find and when you do find it and you drape yourself in that six yards of your shade of purple. You will realize that nothing is impossible for you......all you had to do is look.

Because PURPLE.....is possible......

Wedding Season - A Tale of Banaras

Its the wedding Season and in the contemplation of what to wear one word that is always top of the mind is the ethereal Banaras. This Sari is the very definition of Indian exemplary craftsmanship. One look at a Banaras and you are sure to have fallen in love. The complex weaves and variety of colors makes it one of the most sought after Saris in the Indian diaspora.

When something is so perfect it becomes very difficult to make it better but Sagrika Rai has been able to do just that. She has been celebrated as one of the top ten women in India who has revolutionized the Banaras story in this country, bringing it into the twentieth century with contemporary fabrics and designs yet retaining the sanctity of the weave.

What I loved about this Sari is the kite motif, it is so unique in nature and yet blends into the sari so beautifully the combination of pink and Orange is a classic. If you are a bride from the South and want your sari to be subtly different than this Sari is perfect for you. It has got the look of a Kanjivaram yet it is very light to carry and the color combination of pink and Orange is traditional with a  hint of contemporary.

This next Sari I just chanced upon. One could say that this was a destined find. It was an absolute privilege to  have been able to hold this Sari and gaze upon its awesomeness. If Selling my soul was an option I would have probably till now, to be a owner of this amazing creation. The tone of green matched with the  perfect orange and of course the dancing couple weaved with such precision and beauty.

Warp n ' Weft is a secret that has been kept my many for many years not wanting to share it with one and all. Their treasures are so rare and beautiful that everybody wants to keep it to themselves but if we at Sarinstyle have thrown the doors of the vault open so that you can have that sublime Banaras Sari.

Next we shall bring you some more of her

Eid-e- Milad Mubarak

God created the woman to represent all that is beautiful in this world, she is the mirror of all that which is delicate and ethereal. In her is hidden the fine balance which keeps this world rotating on its axis. This Eid-e-Milad let us remember the teachings of the prophet Muhammad where he talks about the balance which makes a relationship successful.

This day as you meditate on the great teacher's teachings twirl around you fabric that makes a woman blend into the aura that drenches her in the light which emanates from her core and enlight's all the darkness surrounding her.

Kalamkari for Today and Tommorrow

Women I feel are more sensible than men, maybe it stems from the fact that they are multitasker's they can juggle a lot , our programming is tuned to work on parallel levels and its strong enough to be able to cross jump the various levels of hoops. Be it work, family or friends.

They go through life with a positivity and a smile on their face and it is exactly this smile that powers the beauty of art that takes form on a Sari in the form of Kalamkari. These women put their heart and soul into it and the colors come alive in the various stories that are painted on the canvas of a blank Sari. It is a lot of work. Sangeetha Shares with us the process.

Our culture makes us who we are it is the anchor that holds us to the ground and does not let us drift away with the winds of constant change. The core needs to be always strong the rest can transform but your soul needs to be true to its roots. A kalamakari Sari to me is a representative of that soul a representation of our history and a mirror into the collaboration of transformative art which is our future.

I love the dark blue and pink combination it brings alive the painting

Kalamkari - A ancient art

They say that a common man cannot afford luxury , to that I say that luxury is not just about how much you have,  but about if you can appreciate the fine things in life.
A thing does not represent luxury because it is expensive, its value is determined by the craft used to bring it into existence.

The Sari to me is the very definition of luxury a element of style which graces the wearer the aura of luxury. Therefore to me it has always been a question as to why do Indian Women not want to flaunt this aura more often....

We are the land of Kings and Queens, royalty is entwined in our blood, therefore appreciation for the good things in life comes easy. It takes a special kind of eye to appreciate the fine things in life and that is exactly what our tradition teaches us.

Kalmakari is that craft which has been passed down through generations and is witness even today to the divinity that exists in detail. Designer Sangeeta through her Kalamkari festival has been giving this craft a platform through which she brings the style and choice of royalty right to your door.

She has an extensive knowledge about the art form and what I most liked about her designs are the choice of colors. The Sari has a life of its own and it just holds you in its trance. Like she mentions each Sari is a tale which comes alive with the brilliant color scheme and beautiful art.

The artisans are mostly women who create magic with their designs and talent. Their love for the art reflects in the beauty and finesse of these designs transforming them to object's of desire. It elevates them from just a piece of cloth to a piece of Art.

The art in her Sari's is well defined and detailed

Sangeetha takes her inspiration from the endless well of Indian temple art her eye for minute detail captures them in the very intricacies of design and represents them onto the canvas of the Sari.

One post cannot do justice to this beautiful Sari and I shall continue illustrating it in my next...This sari is created with a lot of effort and love. My next blog talks about exactly that. Sangeetha will take you through the process and will also talk about the various fabrics used in a kalmakari sari.

Its time to give thanks.

Thanksgiving is not a Indian tradition and unlike christmas, easter or new year it does not stem from a religious doctrine hence it has never caught my eye. Today as people wished each other on facebook  the word hooked me.

Thanksgiving...how many times are we actually thankful...there are a million moments when we have sighed a relief and thanked the all mighty...like the moment you find your expensive mobile phone when lost, you pass your exams or when you get that job you had pinned your hopes on.

The thankfulness is so fleeting its here a moment and gone the next. Maybe thats the reason why we are so unhappy in todays day and age we want things....which are here now and gone tomorrow. There was a time when we wanted relationships valued them respected them and we were actually shit scared of losing them...hence perhaps the concept of fear of "what people will say " a reality embedded in our Indian culture..Somewhere the purity of relationships got twisted into fear which like all evils got destroyed into "we live for ourselves and not the world "

Why is it that all good things have to be messed up by us......we lost out on one of the most important things of our life...the one thing that we have to be most thankful for...our loved ones...people who have invested in us and have held our hand through the storm.

They are what we need to be most thankful for because if it was not for them a lot of things that today we are thankful for would perhaps not be a part of our life.

For every important occasion in my life with every important person I have worn a Sari...each one bought or gifted with love hence making it more special

I am thankful to have Badi Ma ( Aunt) in my life, I am what I am because of her she taught me the value of selfless love the teaching is a huge part of who I am today...  Wearing a net yellow Lehenga Sari

I  am thankful to have Appa in my life its not often that you are blessed with a father in law who erases the in law part and becomes your father...... Wearing a tomato red georgette with bead work

I am thankful for my husband, when you have no words to describe  a relationship thats when you know that the joy has transcended  to a level where the smile says all...I am wearing a chiffon bandhni

There are some friends who stand by you like a rock in times when the wind is so strong that without their support you would be blown over...Thankful for these  kind of friends......Wearing a Sea Green georgette

wearing a Kanjvaram

Then there are friends who are a reflection of who you are, they find time for you when its absolutely impossible so that you can find time to be you after you are absolutely exhausted of pretending to be somebody you are not...Thankful for their companionship.

wearing a green leheriya.

When the world has stopped turning and the lights are dim,  its your people who will hold your hand and say, there is nothing to worry as long as you have me....

Varnanggal - A brand that weaves bold with beautiful

Bold is beautiful this sentence has been interpreted by many over the years in various shapes, sizes and colors. The thing about art is that it is always open to interpretation. When it comes to us women the word bold has never been used in any positive sense, hence bold and beautiful are two words that share a  relationship which has never been as easy as it sounds.

The individual who looked at a woman and said that bold is beautiful was in the truest sense a feminist because beautiful to the largest part in its existence has never been associated with anything that has stood out for its attention grabbing character, be it as shock or  as awe, bold has always been a very misunderstood personality often getting lost in the definition that a particular society of a particular period bestowed on it.

When I came across this brand Varnanggall the relationship between bold and beautiful was truly well defined. A woman is bold yet beautiful because she is the only one who can stand tall with her values, her beliefs and yet not make another feel small if they are not in sync with her's.

Somehow in the cacophony of male sounds of pride, ego, selfishness, insecurity the boldness of the woman got lost in wanting to be one up on the man in the loudness, insensitivity and pettiness that already has polluted our social and professional atmosphere.

We have somehow forgotten that we are women and not men, blessed with our unique abilities to nurture, to create, to liberate, boldness comes from standing for your values, to fight for your loved ones and create a life which is productive not only for your self but for those around you.

Varnanggall to me is the very embodiment of this a genius coming together of various styles, fabrics and colors stitched together to create a unique single element that can be nobody but just you.

Our identity always lies in our roots

Local artisans create magic with kalmakari, lambani and Ikal

Bold colors revive the essence of the Woman in you

Every creative person knows that when art is created it lives on for a lifetime

Each piece is handcrafted to suit only you. The very definition of customization

The 500 & 1000 INR Saree...because its just not a number..

The whole nation is reeling from the move by the government to discontinue Rupees 500 and 1000 from the system there are mixed responses to the decision which is the case in most major decisions. While my political views on the decision have been made amply clear by me on facebook. As I sat down to write this post It was surely on my mind.... I couldn't seem to make up my mind whether the demonition was high or low.....

If it was low could It buy me a saree and if it was high could it buy me a good enough saree.. something that I could wear for a casual occasion and not think twice...As I looked back at my purchases I realized that the demonition both 500 and 1000 have bought me some  lovely memories in some lovely sarees....each buy has been memorable because I was able to buy a saree which was great in quality and great in style. The wonder of finding something amazing at such a low price made the saree even more valuable to me....

Money can never have a definition despite all the economics of the world it will always be relative...what matters is the joy and peace that it brings you.... sometimes in the form of a saree worth Rs 500 that looks and feels like its worth a 1000...the rest is just ones and zeros'.

All the saree's below either cost 500 or 1000 INR

A cotton kasavu saree

This is my first kasavu saree worn by me in my new house on the occasion of vishu, this saree is deemed auspicious, a classic example of  good things dont need a label.

A beautiful Kalmakari cotton Saree

An exhibition is where I found this lovely beauty at a stall nestled in a corner when I heard how much it was for, I said to myself the most beautiful things in life are undervalued.

A subtle bandhni

This saree was a gift hence cant comment on the fabric, It was my anniversary and a surprise dinner caught me off guard, she was sitting in my closet brand new and made my evening more special. Sometimes now is the only thing that matters.

A simple kerala cotton

She is the reminder of a wonderful time in gods own country, and now sits in the wardrobe of my maid she loved the color. Hence I feel this saree turned out to be the most valuable because it brought happiness twice over.

The tale of a Saree in Bangkok

Its been a great Diwali because I got to spend it in Bangkok ! the break was most welcome and the Thailand trip was absolutely awesome. Most of you would be thinking where is this  going....

The festival of lights is the perfect opportunity for me to drape my five yards to my heart's fullest. This year thou I was going to miss the opportunity.

As I was packing my bag for  travel, cautiously weighing each adventure I was going to embark on,  eliminating adding and again eliminating dresses I stopped for a second. The last day was going to be a dinner cruise on the Chaophraya river and the dress of choice was a strappy short dress.
It was the last day of Diwali and the New Year. What was stopping me from draping a sari.
Why had I not asked myself this question ?
Was there a unsung rule that one cannot wear a Sari on a international Trip...or was I afraid of falling into the aunty category as only elderly women were expected to wear a sari. Nothing is more beautiful, classy and sophisticated than a saree, and as I was wondering which one to carry with me to  its first international destination. A dual tone green and pink pure silk with flower motifs looked at me....I had saved this saree for a special occasion as it was a gift from my loving aunt.
Just like that it was decided, I was going to wear a Saree for the cruise.

The husband was not very excited about the fact that I was going to wear a saree but then as most husbands knew better than to argue :) I wont deny that my heart did flutter, thinking whether I would draw stares or a comment or two...Then I looked at myself draped in this surreal weave and nothing else mattered except the fact that I finally got an opportunity to wear it...

Nothing makes a Woman look beautiful as a Saree and the smile on the husband's face is all I needed to know that I couldn't have looked more beautiful than now.

The night was beautiful with the moon shining bright, as the ship cruised through the calm waters of the river the lit monuments just created the perfect backdrop for memorable pictures and a stunning selfie.

I often wonder why do we downplay are own strengths, the saree is the ultimate symbol of our identity why is it normal for us to wear a gown or a dress for a formal event and not a saree.
Dinner was wonderful because it was accompanied by compliments for my saree and my look.

If I had walked into a bar in  India in a saree I would have probably got disapproving looks but there everybody understood and appreciated that the dress was your identity it represented the culture and craftsmanship of that wonderful country I call home...

Sea Green Love...

I woke up today thinking what do I write about...somehow nothing seemed to inspire and that can be quite frustrating....these blogs are not just research articles, they are a reflection of me.
Clothes have been my most prized possession...not because of any materialistic value but because of the memories they share with me....The saree's I wear are more special to me because each saree has a story, an occasion, a moment, a look...and when I drape it over me I relive that experience and somehow that dress becomes all the more special and I even more beautiful....

Today somehow the color emerald green just sprung to me...maybe because I am going to travel soon and the thought of being able to behold the light green sea with a hint of blue brings about a sense of happiness and joy that can be paralleled only by christmas....BALI has been a dream destination and it was there that I fell in love with this green color.....I am already in love with the sea but seeing it dressed in this green just transformed its beauty to divine proportions...

Th saree's I have featured below reconfirmed my love for the color which is one of those difficult one's to find saree's in...so if you have not yet bought that special saree for Diwali I absolutely recommend it....
